BRIEF HISTORY OF WINE

How did winemaking spread around the world?

According to the sixth edition of the World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson viticulture started in the Caucasus region and Mesopotamia and then migrated to the rest of the world. The illustration on the left shows this migration.

IMPORTANT DATES

FOUNDATION OF THE COMPANY

With a mission to revive the art of winemaking in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains in the Gabala Region of Azerbaijan, the ASPI AGRO company founded ASPI Winery to cultivate and produce high-quality wines.

The Savalan Valley is located at 400 meters above sea level and is surrounded by rivers, where the climate is perfectly balanced for the production of wine.

FIRST VINEYARDS

In preparation for planting the first vines, soil samples were taken from plots of land in the Savalan Valley and thoroughly analysed, a project which was headed by Professor Eugenio Sartori. Based on the results of the analysis, the most suitable kinds of grapes were selected and delivered by Vivai Cooperativi Rauscedo (VCR), a world leader in seedling production. Under the supervision of an internationally acclaimed oenologist, Ermanno Murari, the first vineyards of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were planted on 45ha of the vineyards.

He is an international specialist on seedling diseases, and currently a leading expert at VCR. He holds a PhD in agronomy and oenology.

LOGO DESIGN

The development of a company logo, label, and packaging was another important milestone for the SAVALAN brand. The main inspiration for the label design was the silhouette of our “Sleeping Beauty”, a legendary mountain in Gabala which protects the valley from wind. The labels are printed by Juliagraf, an Italian printing house, the bottles are produced by European n manufacturers including Bruni Glass and Saint-Gobain, and the cork is supplied by the Sugherificio Veneto. In May 2011, the company presented its products at the 17th Azerbaijani International Fair of World Food Azerbaijan 2011 at the Baku Expo Center. This is also when oenologist Elisa Vagnoni joined the company, completing our international winemaking team at SAVALAN – ASPI Winery.

ELIZA VANGONI

She is a technologist-oenologist, who holds a PhD in oenology and is a graduate of the University of Florence. Prior to her work at SAVALAN, she served asan expert-technologist in the creation of a large winemaking enterprise in Australia.
